The Tiger Den and Chelsea’s Boutique opened September 2008, on the Campus of Jones High School. This Project has now become a model for other High Schools to start their own Tiger Den at their School since this initiative began.
The objective of the Tiger Den is to give students a place to “shop” for items they normally couldn’t buy because of the parents’ or guardians’ financial situation. All items are provided at no cost to the students who are able to shop privately without any distractions. Students are welcome to help themselves to whatever they need. The Tiger Den now has opened up to the Community to provide them as well with clothing, shoes, toiletries and other daily life essentials.
The Tiger Den has given out more than 300 Coats to Students when the temperature dropped for several weeks this past year, along with shoes, warm clothing, and other accessories for the students to stay warm. The Tiger Den supports numerous Organizations, along with Orange County Schools, i.e., Pineloch Elementary, Richmond Heights, Memorial Middle, Orla Vista Elementary, Mollie Ray, South Creek Middle School, The Covenant House for Teenagers, and Haiti Relief, Marge’s Daycare, just to name a few Organizations, have been helped by the Tiger Den with coats, clothing and toiletries. The Tiger Den also sends non-perishable food items home with students who are in need on weekly basis.
The Tiger Den continues to be called upon to help other outreach Organizations when they are in need of assistance i.e., Haiti Relief and a Ministry for the Homeless in Paramore Community.
There are many Projects that have started since the Opening of the Tiger Den/Chelsea’s Boutique.
This past year, Chelsea’s Boutique was able to distribute 289 Gowns to any student who wanted to attend the 2009 Prom in Orlando. This Boutique has been open not just to Jones High School Students but other Students from area High Schools who could not afford formal attire for their own Prom i.e., Oak Ridge, Evans, Boone, Ocoee and Colonial High School. The Boutique continues to help the Students from Memorial Middle and Robinswood Middle School for their year end 8th Grade Social.
The Tiger Den Gifts for Grads Project for Graduating Seniors provides those who are going away to College with all their Dorm items each year for a select number of students who normally would not have an opportunity as first in their family to attend a four year University to experience life on a College Campus. Due to the success of the 2009 year Trinity Prepatory School of Winter Park sponsored several students for the Gifts for
Grads Project and this school year we have started Gift for Grads Project on the Campus of Trinity Prepatory School, for a select group of students who will live on Campus at their respective University or College with all their Dorm items. This Project will foster a cultural of Community Service and Volunteerism between the two schools for many years to come.
The Dental Advocacy Program started by Ivy Fowler and Linda Lovett, have joined partnership with Smiles for a Lifetime Foundation. Under this Program, dental care is very important to the both of them. One student a 2009 Jones High Graduate and now a freshman at FAMU has been awarded with $6,000 in Braces and Dental Care from the Foundation. Currently there are two more Students that are waiting to be awarded with Dental Care and Braces from the Smiles for a Lifetime Foundation this year.
